Laura Breit MS PE

Laura Breit is the founder and owner of Oregon-based firms Root Engineers and ColeBreit Engineering. She is a professional mechanical engineer specializing in the design of HVAC, plumbing, and process systems for the cannabis industry. Using her experience in traditional engineering methods through Root Engineers parent company, ColeBreit Engineering, she applies her team’s depth of knowledge to create efficient and economically sound solutions for cultivation and processing facilities. Taking a custom approach to each project, Laura has experience working in the traditional design-bid-build method, as well as in the design-build arena. She enjoys the dynamic nature of the cannabis industry, and since legalization in her home state of Oregon in 2014, Laura has led her team of mechanical and electrical engineers on more than 80 cannabis-related projects across the country. She thrives on building relationships with building owners, growers, architects, contractors and investors. Laura received her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UC Santa Barbara and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Michael Leavitt PE

Michael Leavitt joined the Root Engineers team in 2014 and brought with him expertise in plumbing systems, hydronic systems, and energy modeling. Michael is experienced in engineering and design in commercial, industrial, and private industries within the cannabis space. Michael earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Energy Systems Engineering from Oregon State University, and obtained his PE license in 2018.

Michael Nelson MBA

With over 15 years of experience working in large MEP firms, Michael brings an incredibly diverse range of commercial, medical, higher education, government, high-rise, renewable energy, and sustainability project experience to the Root Engineers Team. As the electrical team leader, Michael and his team bring their passion for electrical engineering and leadership skills to every project. He provides his clients with accurate, detailed designs based on established fundamentals, while bringing new ideas to a market often dominated by traditional ways of thinking. Michael graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from Oregon State University and holds a Masters in Business from Marylhurst University. He is LEED Accredited Professional registered and Green Globes Certified.

Rob James PE

Rob has over 27 years of mechanical engineering experience working on a very diverse range of projects, including space launch complex, oil refinery, nuclear power plant, and building HVAC systems for hospitals, schools, dental clinics, veterinary clinics, churches, restaurants, offices, multi-family housing, retail and industrial facilities. When recreational cannabis was legalized in Oregon, he applied his extensive experience to learning about this industry with its design nuances, and has successfully engineered HVAC systems for dozens of indoor grow and processing facilities.
